Size & Style Mirror Guide
Selecting the right mirror requires a balance of proportion, light, and interior aesthetics. Use this guide to choose the perfect size, shape, and finish for any room in your home.
1. Universal Sizing Formulas
A mirror should complement surrounding furniture without overwhelming or under scaling the wall.
-
Width Rule: Choose a mirror that measures 60% to 80% of the width of the furniture below it (such as a console, dining credenza, or vanity).
-
Clearance Space: Leave 6 to 8 inches of breathing room between the bottom of the mirror frame and the top of your furniture.
-
Eye-Level Placement: For standalone walls, position the center of the mirror roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor.
2. Sizing by Room & Placement
Over a Living Room Mantel
-
Target Size: Fill approximately two-thirds to three-quarters of the mantel width.
-
Pro Tip: Position the frame 4 to 6 inches above the mantel shelf to keep visual focus at eye level.
Bathroom Vanity Mirrors
-
Single Basin: Select a mirror 2 to 4 inches narrower than the vanity counter width.
-
Double Basin: Hang two identical tall/arch mirrors centered directly above each sink basin.
Entryway & Foyer
-
Full-Length Statement: Opt for a tall floor mirror (65+ inches in height) lean-mounted or wall-secured to expand narrow hallways and reflect ambient light.
3. Choosing the Right Shape
| Frame Shape | Ideal Interior Purpose | Visual Effect |
| Arch / Crown Top | Entryways, Mantels, Primary Suites | Adds architectural height and softens harsh wall angles. |
| Rectangle | Dining Rooms, Double Vanities, Consoles | Delivers clean structure, symmetry, and expansive reflective surface. |
| Round / Oval | Powder Rooms, Compact Wall Anchors | Breaks up boxy geometric furniture lines and creates organic flow. |
| Ornamental / Carved | Gallery Walls, Statement Entryways | Serves as standalone focal artwork in classic or eclectic interiors. |
4. Matching Finish to Your Interior Style
-
Gilded Leafing & Antique Patina: Complements Traditional, French Provincial, and European Classic interiors.
-
Matte Black & Bronzed Metal: Works best in Modern Minimalist, Industrial, or Contemporary spaces.
-
Carved Wood & Natural Finishes: Ideal for Transitional, Organic Modern, and Coastal aesthetic homes.
